Introducing the Knight Bill
The Knight Bill is part of my branding for ULHS Theatre. I have the brand identity packet on another page if you would like more information on it. The Knight Bill below is based on the tradition of a Playbill, however, it is modified to suit the needs of ULHS. Below you can see the formatting for digital media as a flip book.
The flipbook also showcases some examples of headshots I have taken of cast and crew, headshots of the direction are not mine, however they are my edits.
More about the photography and edits:
The director needed a color image and the photo was originally black and white. The music director submitted a low resolution photo so I increased the resolution and fixed the lighting. The lighting was initially taken indoors with a strong light coming in from the bottom left. Lastly, the choreographer needed glasses removed from her photo, I also changed the lighting to make it appear more concise with the rest of the photos in the set.
For cast and crew I took all photos under natural lighting. My method is to have a conversation and attempt to gain a natural smile or to capture the naturalness of the person. Each person has a unique beauty and so I try to capture some candid moments and some poses. Edits are fairly small such as removal of acne, whitening of teeth, or possibly a color change of clothing.
The artwork
Traditional
I created a stock image with the lead actress in mind so that my Ti Moune resembled her likeness. The image is created with watercolor, ink, colored pencil, and salt. I wanted something truly organic to convey the feeling of the island. The overall pose is reminiscent of an iconic image of Disney’s Ariel in the 1980’s release of, “The Little Mermaid.” My intentions were to tie the image to a memorable icon. The book that our musical is based on the novel, “My love, My Love” by Rosa Guy. Guy’s novel is actually a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Little Mermaid.” As a result, these parallels really do come full circle and I wanted to capture that in the piece.
New meets Old
All of the above projections are edited in photoshop. I used some stock photos, and some ai generated photos as stock and pieced them together to create the world we had in mind for the island. Our island was heavily inspired by the architecture of the New Orleans French Quater. The story takes place in the early twentieth century, this is implied when the main character sings about a car. I took this to mean that our time period to be circa 1920’s to 1030’s . I also took this approach to design costumes.
Projections
Disclaimer: I do not own any rights to the music to Once On This Island. Due to this fact, these uploads are unlisted on YouTube and the music is only included for the purposes of showing how the projections below were intended to line up with the music.
Promotional Materials
Poster
Poster was 11×18 printed on gloss paper. I used a framing technique to make the picture appear painted on the backdrop. The backdrop is the crackling of a tree trunk enlarged and up close and personal. The edges boarder is a call back to the painting which was used to create the edges. The font is specific to the brand I have tailored for ULHS Knight Theatre.
